FORT MYERS, Florida. – The Central Arkansas women’s football team had a heart-wrenching end to the season, falling in overtime in the ASUN Championship quarterfinals against Kennesaw State on Friday afternoon. After losing 2-0, the Bears rallied to take a 3-2 lead before finally succumbing in overtime.
Emma Hawkins scored the Bears’ first two goals, tying the game to two side goals. With her first score, she took solo control of UCA’s single-season points-scored record, finishing the game with 37. She also tied the one-season record for goals scored, scoring her 15 points. .e goal of the year in the 62sd minute.
The first half was a back-and-forth affair which saw both teams secure opportunities throughout. Each team took ten shots in the first 45 minutes, with Kennesaw ultimately scoring the first goal with just over 20 seconds in the first stanza.
After allowing another goal in the 58e minute, the Bears moved into high gear, desperate to continue their season. Hawkins responded with the UCA game’s first goal 64 seconds later, reducing the deficit to one. The All-Conference First Team forward scored the second half of her brace three minutes later, tying the score. Gibson continued his attacking offense with his score five minutes later, going completely from a 0-2 hole to a 3-2 lead in eight minutes and 45 seconds.
Both teams continued to threaten as the defenses tightened, with each team trying to go further. Macie Rainwater scored her third goal of the game to tie the game again in the 81st minute, setting up overtime. Once in the extra period, the Owls claimed victory in the 94E minute.
Central Arkansas ends its season 9-9 overall, finishing 6-3 in its first season at the ASUN Conference.
